Performance Guidelines for Designers and Contractors of Soil Erosion Control Systems

The purpose of the "Agricultural Erosion Control Structures Training Workshop" is to provide adequate training to agricultural service providers to allow them to provide services of value to clients with soil erosion problems on their farms.

Holders of the Soil Erosion Control Contractor's Certificate of Achievement have attended formal training developed and delivered by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and have passed an exam that tests their minimum skill and knowledge in the area of design and installation of soil erosion control structures.

The Performance Guidelines listed below go beyond the skills and knowledge verified through the training and testing process. The guidelines are intended to provide a consistent set of value added principles for OMAFRA trained soil erosion designers and contractors that reflect "best management practices" for the industry.

Developed and peer reviewed by a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from OMAFRA's Environmental Management Branch and Economic Development Branch as well as representatives from industry, these guidelines outline practices followed by Designers and Contractors providing a high level of professionalism to their clients. When adopted across the industry, these practices can enhance the profession's reputation and maintain a positive public identity, which can lead to increased awareness and trust among clients.

  • Actively pursue formal and informal opportunities to enhance and improve level of knowledge and competence with respect to the design and construction of soil erosion control projects (ie. keep and refer to current versions of the Agricultural Erosion Control Structures Manual, attend industry association meetings and seminars, attend OMAFRA delivered training and information sessions)
  • Act conscientiously and diligently in providing professional services
  • Clearly identify to clients the services being provided
  • Work closely with clients and adjacent landowners to reduce neighbour conflicts as a result of installed soil erosion control projects
  • Recognize the importance of communication between engineers, contractors, farmers, etc. in the design, construction and maintenance of soil erosion control projects
  • Be thoroughly informed when giving professional opinions or making recommendations
  • Consult with other professionals and Ministry staff where appropriate
  • Ensure information and advice provided to clients is accurate and up-to-date
