Animal Health and Welfare Branch
"The Animal Health and Welfare Branch advances farm animal health and welfare and veterinary public health through education, inspection, surveillance, research and emergency preparedness. Veterinary scientists and staff develop standards, deliver technical support to inspectors and veterinarians, and deliver preventive programs. They also provide inspection services in licenced livestock auction markets, dead stock facilities, animal research facilities and livestock medicine outlets. This branch provides support to the Chief Veterinarian for Ontario and also administers the Ontario Beef Cattle Financial Protection Program."
The Animal Health and Welfare Branch is made up of two units:
Veterinary Science and Policy
The goal of staff in the Veterinary Science and Policy Unit is to advance animal health and welfare and protect public health. We develop policy and improve systems that preserve and enhance provincial biosecurity, animal health, animal welfare, disease surveillance, and emergency preparedness. We achieve our goal through collaboration with expert staff across the provincial government, many producer and veterinary organizations, the University of Guelph, the veterinary colleagues in other provinces, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and other areas of the federal government.
The Veterinary Services Unit works towards healthy and humanely treated Animals contributing to a healthy Ontario. It deals with risk management and emergency preparedness in the interests of animal and public health. It works with stakeholders towards the adoption of animal health and welfare best management practices. Unit staff work in regulatory animal health, including conduction of inspections related to livestock medicines, livestock auction markets, research facilities and deadstock licencees. The unit provides workshops, education and training sessions for stakeholders and OMAFRA staff. The unit works closely with animal health and welfare partners such as the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). The work of the unit encompasses the entire Province of Ontario.
