Nutrient
Management Strategy/Plan Preparation Workbook
Introduction
The Nutrient Management Strategy/Plan Preparation Workbook offers a hands
on method for preparing your Nutrient Management Strategy (NMS) and/or Nutrient
Management Plan (NMP) for an agricultural operation.
The goal of this workbook
is to provide you with a step-by-step guide to completing an NMS and/or an NMP
without using the NMAN computer software program.
Prerequisites
- Complete the OMAFRA "Regulations and Protocols Course," either by
attending the classroom course or completing the online version, and
- Attend
the OMAFRA "Introduction to Nutrient Management Course."
Who
can use this Workbook?
The workbook is designed to be used by:
- smaller livestock operations, or
- farmers who don't have access to
computer technology or who choose not to use the NMAN software, or
- farmers
who don't want to use the NMAN software but who want to understand more about
how to prepare an NMS/P so they can work with the consultant preparing the NMS/P
for their farm operation
Who should not use this Workbook?
We
recommend you use NMAN software rather than this workbook to create your NMS/P
if your agricultural operation is:
- an intensive or complex
livestock operation, or
- building an anaerobic digester, or
- applying
non-agricultural source material (NASM) on the fields within your farm unit, or
- designing
a manure storage system that is different from the common systems found in modern
livestock operations
Units of Measure
The workbook has been
prepared using imperial units of measure. If you wish to use metric, there is
a conversion table at the back of the workbook.
Ordering the Workbook
The
workbook comes in two sections. One is for the development of an NMS and one is
for the development of an NMP. Some farms in Ontario are required to prepare both
documents and some are not. Many farmers in Ontario find that even if they don't
have a regulatory requirement for an NMP, developing and following this document
can result in a substantial reduction to input costs.
