What is NMAN 2.1?

NMAN 2.1 is a software tool developed by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. NMAN assists farmers in predicting nutrient generation and determining land base requirements for agronomic use of nutrients.

NMAN 2.1 was released May 2009. It should only be used to generate Nutrient Management Strategies and Plans (NMS/P). If you also generate NASM Plans, use NMAN3-NASM to generate NASM Plans that comply with current regulations.

NMAN 2.1 Features

  • Windows XP/Vista compatible.
  • User-friendly interface.
  • Tracks nutrient and manure applications
  • Considers both agronomic and crop removal nutrient application rates.
  • Can be used for both field and horticultural crops.
  • A database of manure and other nutrient analysis results provides the user with an estimate of the nutrient content of various prescribed materials.
  • Determines manure application rates and actual equipment speeds.
  • Estimates manure storage volume requirements for new storage or livestock housing designs.
  • Shows the equivalent dollar value of the manure nutrients applied.
  • Identifies minimum recommended separation distances from watercourses and risk factors of nitrogen movement to groundwater.
  • Operates in either metric, Imperial or US Imperial measurements.

Opening Older NMAN Files in NMAN 2

NMAN 2 is very different from NMAN 2003/04 versions. Please read the following before you load NMAN 2003/04 files in NMAN 2.

  1. Storage System (MSTOR) Information

Before uploading NMAN 2003/2004 files into NMAN 2, the link between material type (NMAN) and storage system (MSTOR) must exist for all years. We recommend you check the existing file (using NMAN 2003/04) and make sure the "material information" is linked to the correct storage system. If you cannot establish a link for the NMAN 2003/2004 files, you will be required to re-enter your storage system information in NMAN 2.

  2. Transfer Contact Information

Contact information for transfers are in a separate table in NMAN 2. All material transfers in the existing NMAN 2003/04 file are transferred to the new file and a transfer contact is created for each transfer. This approach ensures information is not lost. However, your new file may contain duplicate transfer contact information. After the existing file has been upgraded, we recommend you check the transfer information and consolidate the transfer contacts.

  3. Names used in NMAN must be unique

If a Farm and MSTOR system share the same name (i.e. "Home") the Farm and associated Field information will not be carried over correctly in the upgrade process. If identical names exist in your file make small edits (i.e. "Home Barn" and "Home Farm") to the affected items in the oldest file and save before upgrading to an NMAN 2 version. This will prevent the loss of data.

NMAN 2.1 Online Download

NMAN 2.1 is currently for Nutrient Management Strategies and Plans (NMS/P) only

  • OMAFRA will only accept Nutrient Management Strategies and Plans (NMS/P) for agricultural material prepared using NMAN 2.1 or the Nutrient Management Strategy/Plan Preparation Workbook.
  • OMAFRA will only accept NASM Plans prepared using NMAN3-NASM.

Downloading NMAN 2.1

To download NMAN 2.1, click the link below and follow the instructions.

  1. When you click on the link below, depending on your Windows configuration you will be asked whether to Save the File or Run the File from the Current Location. Both options work equally well. It may be convenient to save the file to your Desktop and then delete it once the upgrade has been completed.

  2. Once the file is downloaded, double click the file or click "Open" and the online upgrade will engage InstallShield©, a program which assists in the installation of the new version. Follow the InstallShield instructions.

  3. When installing NMAN 2.1, existing versions of NMAN 2 are updated. This installer will not overwrite or impact older versions of NMAN installed on your system (NMAN June 14, 2004 R4 or older).

  4. When upgrading, your ".NMP" data files will not be changed, modified, or deleted. New copies will be made, upgraded and saved as ".NM2" data files.

Troubleshooting When Installing NMAN 2.1

If you are unsuccessful in downloading the upgrade, you can contact any OMAFRA Regional Office to receive a new NMAN CD in the mail. Please consider the following common problems before calling the NMAN hotline number (1-866-242-4460):

  1. When downloading, if your internet security settings are set to a restrictive level you may not be able to download an executable (program) file. Downloading any file from the internet has risks. If you lower your security settings in order to download this file, you should reset them to their previous levels afterwards.

  2. The download file is very large (85 MB) because it contains the InstallShield© software and Adobe Acrobat Reader. On slow internet connections, the downloading process may take time.
